Lady Bears take down Clark Atlanta

ATLANTA -- After Raiana Johnson (2 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks) scored on an offensive putback with 8:49 left in Thursday's contest against Clark Atlanta, Miles did not make another basket from the floor.

Good thing the Lady Bears had a 15-point lead at the time.

CAU made things very interesting at the end, but Miles won a battle of the free throws in earning a 62-58 win over the Panthers at Epps Gym. Mya Millner scored a career-high 18 points in the win for the Lady Bears (6-3, 2-1 SIAC West), who have now won three straight over Clark Atlanta (3-9, 2-2 SIAC East).

Miles led 54-39 after Johnson's bucket, which was the team's largest lead of the game. But the Lady Bears could not buy a basket from any part of the floor for the rest of the contest, missing their last 10 shots from the field. But Clark Atlanta wasn't much better. After Jalisa Jones scored with seven minutes left to cut their deficit to 54-47, the Panthers would not make another basket from the field, missing their last seven shots.

The game, seemingly and almost literally, turned into a free throw shooting contest. CAU made 11-for-16 freebies while Miles was 8-for-12 from the charity stripe to close out the game, which went down to the final seconds. Reagan Jackson (11 points) made two free throws for CAU with 55 seconds left to cut the deficit to 60-58. After a Miles turnover, the Panthers had a chance to take the lead with 11 seconds left but missed the mark. Millner grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and connected on her two free throws - her 9th and 10th makes of the game - for the final margin.

The first half saw both teams exchange the lead on several occasions. A 3-pointer by Sakina Wynn gave Miles a 24-16 lead with six minutes left before the half but three straight CAU buckets erased the entire lead in 68 seconds. Victoria Sutton would answer with a 3-pointer to put the Lady Bears back in front before going into halftime with a 31-30 advantage.

In the third quarter, the Lady Bears got some separation thanks to their defense. The Panthers did not score a basket from the field over the final 4:56 and Miles used an 8-2 run, punctuated by a Kahyanne Bolton (6 points) basket, to open a 48-39 lead after three quarters.

Jones (13 points) was one of four players in double figures for CAU while Autum Morings had 9 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals. Wynn had 12 points and 9 rebounds, Sutton finished with 10 points and Katrice Jackson had 2 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots for Miles, which plays at Fort Valley State on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for noon.
