Miles and LeMoyne-Owen stood toe-to-toe Monday night, throwing haymakers as the game churned into one, then two, overtime periods. But after each team made a shot with less than five seconds remaining to force an extra period, it was the Lady Magicians who connected for the knockout blow.
LeMoyne-Owen forward Tenesha Wright scored on a layup with 1.8 seconds remaining in the second overtime to secure a 65-63 over Miles at Knox-Windham Gymnasium. Wright scored 10 of the Lady Magicians' 14 points in the two overtimes and finished with 21 points. The loss overshadowed a banner night by
Taylor Terry (18 points, 15 rebounds), who set career highs in points and rebounds for the second straight game in producing her first career double-double.
The game looked as if it might go into a third overtime.
Raiana Johnson (seven points, eight rebounds) scored with 1:08 left to give the Lady Bears (5-11, 3-6 SIAC West) a 63-61 lead. But Miles would turn the ball over on its last two possessions. Corlishia Howard, who had missed her first 12 shots from the field, tied the game with 18 seconds left. After the second turnover, LOC (9-8, 6-5) called a timeout and advanced the ball into the frontcourt. A well-executed inbound play left a free lane for Wright to drive to the basket uncontested for the game-winner. The Lady Bears were unable to get off a good shot from three-quarters court as time expired.
Miles had a chance to win in regulation.
Victoria Sutton (nine points, five assists) knocked down two free throws with nine seconds left to give the Lady Bears a 51-49 lead. But Wright, who took up the scoring slack after Lady Magician leading scorer Dana Gettis (17 points) fouled out, hit a short jumper in the lane to tie they game.
Frantisha Tyson's heave at the horn missed, which sent the game into overtime.
The Lady Bears trailed by as many as four points in the first overtime period and never led. But after Howard split two free throws with six seconds left,
Amoni Walker (11 points) drove the lane to the right and laid the ball in with one second to go to tie the game at 58. Wright's fullcourt heave fell short, sending the game to the second overtime.
The Lady Magicians dominated the opening portion of the contest. They led by as many as 10 points on two occasions, the last coming early in the second quarter. But back-to-back 3-pointers by
Jasmine Hollis (eight points) and Walker tied the game at 21 and consecutive jumpers by Terry inside the final minute gave Miles a 30-25 halftime advantage.
The Lady Bears are back in action Wednesday night when they host Fort Valley State in a non-conference tilt. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
